You're obviously thoughtful and very smart. Who knows, you might be brilliant. But I junked all that myself. It got me nowhere here. Sure, my current profile, it's an historical patchwork culled from a bunch of my Match experiences--when I used to broadcast how exceptional I was, and how I, too, was looking for an exceptional person. But, as I said, I junked all that. I'm going silly and clownish now. Broken up sentences. No more flattering emails from Princeton ABD's telling me "that last sentence is straight out of Proust." Give me a bucket of fried chicken over that! You have to remember that, like a game of war, whose conclusion is pre-determined by the turning of the deck's first card, the outcome of the novels you edit is no less uncertain. But here, just as you say, "it just doesn't work that way."
